3 Days Mount Nyiragongo Hiking In Congo

3 days You can witness the only volcano with a lava lake and where visitors can pay to see a boiling Magma Lake by hiking up Mount Nyiragongo. The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Virunga national park is home to Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano.
The oldest national park in Africa is Virunga. The park once reached as far as Mgahinga National Park and the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
The endangered okapi, mountain gorillas, bongo antelopes, lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, chimpanzees, and other birds all call Virunga home.
The park has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its amazing biodiversity.

Day 1: Pickup – Kigali City Tour – Transfer from Kigali to Congo

You will be picked up by our company’s driver from the airport or your Kigali hotel. Before the transport to Congo, if you arrive early, you will have the chance to take the Kigali city tour. Comparatively speaking, Kigali is small city, but its clean streets and picturesque hills make it stand out.
You will stop at the genocide memorial sites, the presidential palace museum, the central city market, and the artisan shops throughout your city tour.
The tour will then begin from Kigali via Lake Kivu to the border crossing at Goma. You will have the chance to explore Rwanda’s stunning scenery, rolling hills, friendly folks, and the gorgeous Congo border crossing on the drive from Kigali to that crossing.

Lunch will be served either at a hotel restaurant close to the border crossing or along Lake Kivu. Following lunch, you will visit the border crossing points to clear immigration. Your Congo visa should already be in the system, but you’ll also need a passport and a yellow fever card to travel into the country. When your paperwork has been verified, travel over to the Congo side where a staff from Virunga National Park will be waiting to take you to your lodge.

Dinner and overnight will be spent at Mikeno Lodge’s Kibumba Tented Camp and Bukima Tented Camp, respectively (Luxury).

Day 2: Nyiragongo Hike – Observing the Lava Lake

As you wait to be transported to the park offices for registration and the briefing about Nyiragongo Hiking at the Kibatsi settlement, you will awaken and eat an early morning breakfast (The Nyiragongo hike starting point).
There are many of other hikers at the beginning location. The moment to hire any porters is now. If you have slower hikers in your company, you shouldn’t anticipate leaving them behind until the very end of the trail.

The lower slopes of the volcano are covered in lush, green jungle as you approach it. Take advantage of the fact that unique plants, small primates, birds, and mammals live in these woodlands. Watch out for chimpanzees, monkeys, and antelopes, specifically.

As you climb, you’ll start to realize that there is less vegetation.
During the most recent eruption, scorching laves mostly damaged the vegetation. It’s advantageous that there isn’t much vegetation here because it gives you better view of the area’s topography, which includes the Virunga National Park, the Rwenzori Mountains, other Virunga Volcanoes, Goma Town, Kahuzi Biega National Park, and Lake Kivu. Depending on the group’s general fitness, climbing Mount Nyiragongo takes to hours.
Keep in mind that nobody in the group is ever left behind while hiking.
Expect to get at the summit just before dusk. You’ll head straight for the incredible lake of bubbling lava to be in awe of. You will eat dinner and spend the night in cabins at the summit.

Day 3: Descend the Nyiragongo volcano and head back to Kigali.

It’s time to head off after viewing the volcano and spending the night with other trekkers. Get up early and eat the breakfast that the porters have prepared. At 8 am, the volcano’s descent begins. This is your chance to enjoy uninterrupted views of the stunning scenery in Virunga National Park if you’ve never had the chance to do so because you were too exhausted. You will be taken to the border crossing between Congo and Rwanda once you arrive at the base. You will be interacting with Rwandan officials this time. They will charge you $30 for a second Rwanda visa so that you can return. From the Rwandan side, our office guide will be ready to begin the trip to Kigali.
